The outliers that can't be represented well by a 50/50 system (which are actually pretty rare, maybe one or two cards per season) can be easily corrected with a house rule if they bother you that much. SOM's Super Advanced has one of the best stealing system of any game I've seen. As other poster mentioned, it's all one card BEFORE you roll the dice, and the statistical results bares out its accuracy.
Personally, I have no problem with the 50/50 system, and stats bare out the accuracy of this game design. The essence of baseball is lefty/righty matchups, IMO, and no other game handles this aspect of the game better than SOM. While I've played many different games (APBA, Replay, Inside Pitch, Pursue the Pennant), I always return to Strat-O-Matic.
